Paintball offers an exciting mix of strategy, teamwork, and adrenaline. If you’ve never played before, stepping onto the field can feel overwhelming. What should you wear? Do you need your own gear? How much will it cost? This guide answers those questions and more, helping you prepare for your first paintball experience with confidence.

What to Expect When Playing Paintball for the First Time

Paintball is a fast-paced game where players eliminate opponents by hitting them with paint-filled pellets shot from a paintball marker (gun). The game combines physical activity with tactical thinking. You’ll run, dodge, and take cover behind obstacles while working with your team to achieve objectives. It's a chess game with "Call of Duty" style live action.

Before your first game there will include a safety briefing and instructions on how to use the equipment. Maybe a trip to the target range and a few practice shots. Fox Paintball provides your group with a referee to enforce rules and ensure safe play.

How to Prepare for Your First Paintball Game

Preparation can make your first paintball experience more enjoyable and less stressful. Here are some key steps:

  • Understand the rules: Before playing, familiarize yourself with basic paintball rules and safety guidelines. This helps you feel more comfortable on the field.

  • Stay hydrated: Paintball can be physically demanding. Drink plenty of fluids before and during the game. Fox Paintball sell drinks like Gatorade and water, bu you are welcome to bring your own as well.

  • Get a good night’s sleep: You’ll need energy and focus.

  • Arrive early: This gives you time to get checked in and gear up. Walk on registration starts at 9am at Fox Paintball and Walk-on games usually start around 10am. Private events and groups have hteir own time frames and you'll need to check with your Group Oranizer to confirm your time to arrive.

  • Wear comfortable, layered clothing: Weather can change, so layers help you adjust.

Best Clothing to Wear for Paintball

Choosing the right clothing protects you and improves your mobility. Here’s what to consider:

  • Long sleeves and pants: These protect your skin from paintball impacts and scratches from bushes or rough terrain.

  • Dark or camouflage colors: These help you blend into the environment and hide paint splatters. Any type of hunting clothing works well.

  • Durable fabrics: Thick cotton or polyester blends work well. Avoid thin or loose fabrics that can snag. Jerseys for other sprts can provide great protection.

  • Avoid white or bright colors: These show paint stains easily and make you an easy target.

  • Gloves: Mechanics style gloves work best. Locally , the good old Menards glove bin has a great selection of basic gloves that can be used. While not required to play its nice to have the option available to yourself. Fox Paintball also sells basic fingers less armored gloves on site.

Best Footwear for Paintball

Your shoes can affect your performance and safety. Look for:

  • Closed-toe shoes with good ankle support: Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers work well. A shoe that laces up is the best.

  • Good traction: The field may be muddy or uneven, so shoes with solid grip prevent slipping.

  • Comfort: You’ll be on your feet a lot, so choose shoes you can wear for hours without discomfort.

  • NO sandals or open toed shoes: Fox Paintball Will not allow you to play with this type of footwear.

Equipment: Should You Bring Your Own or Rent?

Fox Paintball offers rental equipment, which is perfect for beginners. Rental packages can include:

  • Tippmann or Planet Eclipse Paintball markers (gun)

  • Safety: Friends can watch out for each other.

  • Fun: Sharing the experience creates lasting memories.
